OUT-OF-FIELD SCIENCE TEACHERS – A STAQ POSITION STATEMENT

Research shows there is no consistent relationship between teacher qualifications and student achievement. However, highly effective science teachers value science and promote the deep engagement of their students with science. They typically possess strong content knowledge and deliver this through appropriate teaching strategies.

Out-of-field teachers of science can be concerned about their ability to demonstrate the application of science in everyday life for their students. Support and training for these teachers is the key as well as recognition that it is difficult to teach out-of-field.

The Science Teachers’ Association of Queensland (STAQ) has initiatives in place to provide appropriate support and training for these teachers. We currently offer a program of online seminars that align with the Australian Curriculum: Science.

With targeted government funding for professional development programs and mentoring, more support could be offered by STAQ to build teacher capacity to present science that is real and relevant to students.
